Product innovation: PET based ThermHex honeycomb panel for applications in mass transportation secto

Published on 14-03-2012

A unique design for production of very acoustic effective composite panels using EconCore’s ThermHex honeycomb based on PET material is being developed jointly by a consortium of a few companies. This new lightweight sandwich panel concept will be presented on the JEC show in Paris at the end of March.

A special production process and design of layers in this sandwich construction lead to excellent acoustic absorption through a wide frequency range. The unique characteristics are achieved thanks to particle filling of the honeycomb cells... adding excellent thermal insulation properties as a bonus. TZV Gredelj, a leading central European producer of railway vehicles, designed and manufacturers this sandwich panel. They report very good fire resistance rating of S4-SR2-ST2 according to DIN 5510-2, a standard for the railway industries.

Besides the thermoplastic honeycomb core of EconCore, the TZV Gredelj’s design consists of Amorim’s cork and a micro perforated metal sheet. The proposal is dedicated especially to the mass transportation sector, including railway, marine, automotive, buses or heavy trucks.

Portuguese company Amorim Cork Composites will present this sandwich panel concept on their JEC stand X72.
